Heartland Pacific is owned and operated by Hugh Morrow — sailor, family man, and entrepreneur. Hugh arrived in Xiamen, China over 20 years ago and built a life there that most Westerners never experience from the inside.
In 2008, Hugh served as the sole American crew member aboard the Princess Taiping — a hand-built Ming Dynasty junk replica — on a historic 17,000-mile trans-Pacific voyage from Xiamen to San Francisco and back. Along the journey he sailed alongside the Hōkūle'a, the legendary Hawaiian voyaging canoe, and presented at maritime museums in San Francisco, San Diego, and Hawaii.
For 13 years Hugh worked directly for one of China's most prominent industrial families — in international sales and in a deeply personal family role that gave him unparalleled access to Chinese culture and business at the highest levels. During that time he built long-standing import/export operations in stone and chemicals, and assisted the American delegation overseeing the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial granite — carved in Fujian Province and shipped from Xiamen to Washington D.C.
COVID brought Hugh's family home to Iowa in 2020. What was meant to be temporary became six years of building something new — channeling two decades of Asia relationships into Heartland Pacific.
